OVERVIEW

The “Junior Academic Development Summer Program” is specifically designed to help black male youth between the ages of 10-12 years old to succeed in school. The four core courses included in the Junior Academic Development Summer Program are: 1) Bible Study; 2) Black History Appreciation; 3) English; and 4) Math.

In addition to the four courses, the participants will enjoy learning a broad range of topics such as conflict resolution, gang prevention strategies, health and nutrition, gardening, art, music, public speaking, and future planning. The participants will have a chance to participate in fun gym activities and attend one field trip. Finally, the participants will have a chance to meet local leaders from the community when they serve as guest speakers!

OBJECTIVES/GOALS

The objectives of the “Junior Academic Development Summer Program” are to prepare black male youth to be well-rounded successful students in school. The goals of the Program are to enroll 30 black male youth into each session for a total of 90 students. After the students complete the Program, they will return to school confident in their abilities to earn A’s in their math and English classes. They will also impress their teachers and parents with their positive personalities and desire to excel in all aspects of their lives.

ADMISSION CRITERIA

Applicants for admission must meet the following criteria:

  • residents of Cabarrus, Gaston, Mecklenburg, Union, or York counties
  • between the ages of 10-12 years old as of June 17, 2013
  • have a desire to attend the Program
  • willingness to learn and participate in class
  • adhere to “Code of Conduct”
  • follow “Dress Code Policy”
  • no school suspensions or criminal record

PROGRAM SCHEDULE

We are offering the three-week “Junior Academic Development Summer Program” during the two sessions listed below. The sessions will be offered at the Dowd YMCA on Morehead Street in Charlotte, North Carolina. Please apply to attend the session that fits your schedule the best.

  • Session A: June 17 – July 5, 2013 (NO SEATS AVAILABLE!)
  • Session B: July 08 – July 26, 2013

DAILY SCHEDULE

The Program will operate Monday – Friday as follows:

  • 07:30 am – 08:30 am = Drop-Off Time
  • 08:30 am – 09:00 am = Breakfast refreshments
  • 09:00 am – 09:30 am = Bible Study
  • 09:30 am – 10:00 am = Black History Appreciation
  • 10:00 am – 10:15 am = Break
  • 10:15 am – 11:15 am = English
  • 11:15 am – 12:15 pm = Math
  • 12:15 pm – 01:00 pm = Lunch
  • 01:00 pm – 01:30 pm = Fun Gym Activities
  • 01:30 pm – 02:00 pm = Afternoon Refreshments
  • 02:00 pm – 03:00 pm = Fun Hands-On Learning Activities
  • 03:00 pm – 04:00 pm = Free Your Mind!
  • 04:00 pm – 05:30 pm = Pick-Up Time

PANEL INTERVIEWS

The applications will be used to select candidates for panel interviews. Candidates will be notified by phone if selected for an interview. At that time, candidates will be told the date, time, and location of the panel interview with members of the Emerging Leaders Mentorship Program for Black Male Youth team. Note: Parents must attend the interviews too.

TUITION FEES

The tuition fee for each three-week session is only $300. The fee includes ten hours of supervision, learning materials, breakfast and afternoon refreshments, classroom with the latest technology, fun activities, one field trip, and the ability to learn from certified teachers and guest speakers. So, you are basically paying $2 per hour for high-quality services!!

INVESTORS NEEDED!

With your help, we can offer fifty “$100 Scholarships” for parents who cannot afford to pay the full $300 tuition fee. Please click here to invest in the “JAD Program Scholarship Fund”. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

If you cannot afford the $300 tuition fee, we provide raffle tickets that you can sell to raise the money. Therefore, you will not have to pay the tuition fee out of pocket.
